A healthy
lifestyle

Sally-Ann had an interest in fitness from her childhood, sports and athletic pursuits have always been part of her life. Her interests and hobbies include water sports, running, extreme workouts, gardening and outdoor activities. In 2017, Sally became the Power lifting Age Group Winner at Nova University for dead lifting. However, her more profound health journey and plant- based lifestyle began after a stage 2 cancer diagnosis which she courageously fought through surgeries and treatments until full recovery. “I am forever grateful to the people who cared for me, supported and encouraged me”—says Sally, whose unbeatable character has helped her rise after every challenge. She believes her journey has made her a better captain in every way, as she lives more meaningfully and seeks to gain a greater understanding of the world around her. While plant-based nutrition has become a key element of her recovery, Sally indulges in the occasional treat and encourages all her crew to take care of themselves, often promoting group exercise sessions, gym visits and team runs.

From baker
to pianist

With a family legacy of baking, culinary adventures are natural for Sally whose mother and grandmother were successful South African bakers with a thriving business that grew in great part thanks to Sally’s own entrepreneurial input and guidance. “Baking brings me closer to my family roots and connects me to my granny and first cooking teacher. She recently passed away and when I bake I pay tribute to her memory.”—says Sally, who frequently bakes for friends and family and is well known for delicious carrot cakes and lemon meringue pies. When baking for herself, she goes sugar-free and plant-based, but when sharing her treats with others, she lets them indulge.

An artist from birth, Sally played the piano before she could even speak. Having studied Arts and Music at the University of Kwazulu Natal, she pursued her talent as a pianist through performance level, winning 3rd place in her province in Competitive Classical Performance. While she can’t always play while crossing oceans, Sally knows that music connects brains and hearts, and listens from Chopin to Pop as her day moves from busy productive mornings, to serious accounting hours and peaceful meditative evenings.

Advocacy
and Law

Early in her yachting career Sally-Ann realized how oblivious most crew are about their rights within the industry, which encouraged her to dig deeper and learn as much as possible in her quest to find out the correct details for many situations related to the protection of crew members. Dedicated to helping people, educating and guiding her colleagues, gaining a deep understanding of maritime law has become a passion for Sally, who sees further law studies as a possibility in the horizon. In the meantime, colleagues worldwide have become aware of her knowledge and frequently reach out to her for information.
